About Somnath Temple And Its Importance
The Somnath temple is considered to be one of the major temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in India. It is regarded as the first Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas, thus attracting numerous pilgrims. It stands near the meeting point of the three rivers, namely Kapila, Hiran, and Saraswati, as well as near the Arabian Sea. Therefore, it can be claimed that this site has both religious and touristic significance.
In addition, according to the ancient legend, this temple was initially constructed by King Soma. Later on, it was reconstructed by various kings, such as Ravana. Moreover, throughout its history, this temple experienced numerous attacks and destruction. Nevertheless, despite all these difficulties, the temple was constantly rebuilt again and again.
The present temple was rebuilt in 1951 with the support of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It is built in the Chaulukya style, which looks detailed and attractive. One special part of the temple is the Baan Stambh. This pillar shows a straight direction toward the South Pole with no land in between. Because of this, many people interested in history and geography also visit the temple.
